“THE BEST WAY TO FIND YOURSELF

“The best way to find yourself is to lose
yourself in the service of others.”
                                                        Mahatma Gandhi

On a chilly December day several years ago, our Male Volunteer Coordinator Herb Scholes drove across town to give an interview with Joel Wrobbel, the host of the Saturday morning radio show “Journey Through Aging”.  “Journey Through Aging” is a very informative and uplifting radio show which airs every Saturday on WRFD (880 AM) at 8:00 a.m.

Herb walked into that radio station with no preparation because, as he told me, he wanted to speak from his heart. Recently when I sent a copy of his interview to a potential new male volunteer, I took the opportunity to again listen to Herb’s interview and was struck with how sincere Herb was when talking about how volunteering changed his life for the better.

We all know, and I have witnessed personally, the valuable impact volunteering can make in our community, but maybe we are not aware of the beneficial impact it also has on the volunteer.  Repeatedly I hear from our volunteers how volunteering with Betty Brewer’s Angels has had such a positive effect on their lives, that they feel a little guilty when people say what a good thing they are doing.   In general it has been proven that volunteering improves the volunteer’s life socially, mentally, and spiritually.

Herb has his story, do you have your own story?  Are you ready to find out if visiting one-on-one with a lonely resident in a long-term-care facility is right for you? If so, please contact me.  I would love to answer any of your questions and tell you more about the work our volunteers do.   bettybrewersangels@wowway.com or 614-309-4677.

We are having our Autumn Coffee this year at 10:00 on Thursday, October 8th at Abblington Assisted Living in Pickerington, Ohio.  Our guest speaker will be Michelle Crum from the Alzheimer’s Association, Central Ohio Chapter  If you are interested in attending, please contact me.
