RANDOM THOUGHTS AS 2016 BEGINS

Before we are firmly into 2016, I wanted to share with you a few thoughts this January.

1)  The other day someone asked me what I have learned the most since Betty Brewer’s Angels started.  This was an easy one for me to answer. Simply:  Humans Need Each Other to Thrive.”

2) The biggest gifts do not come in wrapping paper.   Four of the many gifts the residents give to our volunteers are the gifts of wisdom, perseverance, appreciation, and how to handle difficult situations with grace. Four of the many gifts our volunteers give to the residents are joy, friendship, compassion, and companionship.

3)  Walking into a long-term care facility is like walking into a library.  Each resident is like a book in that they each have a fascinating life story waiting to be shared.

4) Little things mean so much: In November we had a combined volunteer/resident birthday party which featured chicken soup from Bob Evans, that everyone loved, but the real hit was that the food was served in decorative pottery ware and that a centerpiece graced the table. The residents truly loved such care was was taken with the serving dishes and decorations.

5) Laughter is the best medicine.  Photo of me in reindeer anthers this past Christmas at one of the many long-term care facilities our volunteers visit. And yes, that is a red Rudolf nose that lights up. LOL!

Have you ever thought about being a Betty Brewer’s Angel volunteer but because of other obligations do not think you would have the time for a weekly commitment?  The solution may be to become a “Fill-In” volunteer.  We need people who can fill in for Betty Brewer’s Angels volunteers, who due to personal circumstances, cannot for several weeks visit with the resident they have chosen.  The “Fill-In” volunteer fills that void.  “Fill-In” volunteers receive the same training and support as full-time volunteers.

We only have male volunteers visit with male residents and female volunteers visit with female volunteers.

If interested in becoming a Betty Brewer’s Angels volunteer, either Full-Time or on an As Needed basis, please contact me either by email
www.bettybrewersangels@wowway.com or call me 614-309-4677. I would love to answer your questions
